“God often does His greatest work in our lives when we have the least control over our circumstances.”
In today’s First Reading, the prophet Elijah is sent by God to a hidden place near a brook. A drought is coming, yet God promises to provide for him. Remarkably, God uses ravens—birds that are usually associated with taking food rather than giving it—to feed Elijah. This reminds us that God can provide for us in unexpected ways. When human resources fail, God’s providence never fails.
In the Gospel, Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes. At first glance, His words seem strange: “Blessed are the poor in spirit… blessed are those who mourn… blessed are those who are persecuted.” The world says that happiness comes from power, wealth, comfort, and success. Jesus says true blessedness comes from trusting God even in weakness, suffering, and trials.

The connection between the readings is trust. Elijah trusted God’s promise in the midst of drought. The people whom Jesus calls “blessed” are those who trust God when life is difficult. They may not have everything they want, but they have God—and that is enough.
