Small Actions, Big Impact: How Young People Can Save the Environment

PERSPEKTIFNUSANTARA.COM– Every day, millions of plastic bags, bottles, and food wrappers are thrown away across Indonesia. Much of this waste ends up in rivers and oceans, threatening wildlife and human health. Floods caused by clogged drainage systems, rising temperatures, and polluted air have become increasingly common in many areas. While governments and companies play important roles in solving environmental problems, young people also have the power to create change through simple actions practiced every day. In our opinion, protecting the environment does not always require large movements or expensive solutions because small actions, when done consistently, can contribute to meaningful change.

Environmental problems in Indonesia continue to grow and demand immediate attention. Plastic pollution has become one of the most serious environmental challenges faced by society today. Indonesia is known as one of the countries that produces large amounts of plastic waste every year, much of which ends up in rivers and oceans. This issue not only damages ecosystems but also affects human life, especially communities that rely on clean water and healthy environments. In our view, environmental damage should no longer be seen as a distant issue because its effects can already be felt in daily life.

Young people have an important role in addressing these challenges because they are often more adaptable to new habits and ideas. Many teenagers and university students are already beginning to participate in environmental movements through school programs, social media campaigns, or community activities. However, we believe that contributing to environmental protection does not always have to involve joining large organizations. Even simple habits practiced regularly can make a meaningful difference.

For example, bringing reusable water bottles instead of buying bottled drinks can significantly reduce plastic waste over time. Using reusable shopping bags, avoiding single-use plastics, and separating waste at home are also simple actions that help minimize environmental damage. In many schools and universities, students have started implementing recycling projects and environmental campaigns to encourage responsible habits among their peers. Although these actions may seem small individually, their collective effect can be significant when practiced consistently by many people.

Another reason why young people can contribute to environmental protection is their strong connection with digital platforms and technology. Today, social media has become a powerful tool for sharing information and influencing behavior. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are no longer used only for entertainment but can also spread awareness about important issues, including environmental protection.

We believe that young people can use social media to inspire positive change by sharing practical tips about reducing waste, saving electricity, or participating in environmental activities. For example, many content creators now encourage audiences to join clean-up events, reduce plastic consumption, or support eco-friendly products. These efforts show that environmental campaigns can be engaging, relatable, and effective in reaching younger generations.

Environmental education also plays a major role in shaping responsible behavior. Schools and universities should not only focus on academic performance but also help students develop environmental awareness through practical experiences. Activities such as tree planting, beach clean-ups, recycling programs, and environmental seminars can help students understand that protecting nature is a shared responsibility.
