PERSPEKTIFNUSANTARA.COM– Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming education at an unprecedented speed. Today, students can generate essays, summarize journal articles, translate texts, and solve complex academic problems within seconds using AI-powered tools. While these innovations increase efficiency and expand access to knowledge, they also raise a fundamental question: as machines become more capable, are students continuing to develop their own intellectual and moral capacities, or are they gradually becoming dependent on technology for tasks that once required critical thought and personal judgment? This question lies at the heart of Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence, released on May 25, 2026. The document emphasizes that technological progress must always be guided by the protection of human dignity, social justice, and the common good. Pope Leo XIV argues that every generation has the responsibility to build a society where “the dignity of every person is safeguarded, justice is promoted and fraternity is made possible.”

The message is particularly relevant for students because higher education is not merely about obtaining information or producing correct answers. Universities are expected to cultivate critical thinking, creativity, ethical awareness, and intellectual independence. AI can certainly support this process. For example, students may use AI to identify relevant academic sources, improve grammar in research papers, or receive feedback on writing. However, problems emerge when AI replaces rather than supports learning. A student who relies entirely on AI-generated essays may submit a polished assignment, yet fail to develop the analytical skills and subject understanding that education is intended to foster.

Pope Leo XIV does not reject technology. On the contrary, Magnifica Humanitas acknowledges the enormous benefits of AI in education, healthcare, science, and social development. Nevertheless, the encyclical warns against viewing human beings primarily through the lens of efficiency, productivity, or technological performance. Human dignity, according to the document, does not depend on usefulness or achievement; it is inherent in every person. Therefore, technological systems must remain instruments that serve humanity rather than forces that redefine human worth.

A central argument of the encyclical is that AI only imitates certain functions of human intelligence. Although AI can process vast amounts of information and generate sophisticated responses, it lacks lived experience, moral conscience, emotional understanding, and personal responsibility. It cannot genuinely experience friendship, love, suffering, or ethical conflict. Consequently, while AI can assist students in obtaining information, it cannot replace the human capacity for wisdom, reflection, and moral judgment.

Concrete examples can already be seen in academic settings. Many students use AI to draft essays or answer examination questions. When used responsibly, these tools can improve productivity and learning efficiency. However, when students submit AI-generated work without critical evaluation, they risk weakening their ability to construct arguments, assess evidence, and express original ideas. Similarly, AI can summarize a research article, but only the student can evaluate the credibility of the source, identify biases, and connect the findings to broader social or ethical issues. These higher-order thinking skills remain uniquely human.

Beyond education, the concerns raised in Magnifica Humanitas reflect broader global challenges. The encyclical highlights issues such as misinformation, concentration of technological power, labor displacement, and the growing influence of AI on social and political life. Pope Leo XIV warns that technological advancement without ethical guidance may deepen inequality and undermine democratic values. As future professionals, policymakers, and leaders, students must therefore learn not only how to use AI effectively but also how to evaluate its social consequences responsibly.

Ultimately, Magnifica Humanitas offers an important lesson for students in the digital age: technology should enhance human potential, not diminish it. The true measure of progress is not how intelligent machines become, but how well human beings preserve wisdom, responsibility, compassion, and moral integrity while using those machines. Students who engage critically with AI, rather than depending on it unthinkingly, will be better prepared to contribute to a society where innovation serves humanity. In this sense, safeguarding human dignity is not simply an ethical ideal; it is an essential requirement for ensuring that the future of technology remains genuinely human.
