In the Gospel, Jesus tells us that His disciples are salt and light. Notice that He does not say, “Try to become salt” or “Try to become light.” He says, “YOU ARE.” Through our baptism, God has already given us a mission to bring His presence into the world.
Many times we feel like that widow. We think our talents are too small, our efforts too insignificant, our resources too limited. We say, “What difference can I make?” But God is not asking us to give what we do not have. He asks us to offer what we have, however small it may seem.
A kind word to a lonely person, a patient smile, a hidden sacrifice, a faithful prayer, a simple act of charity—these may look insignificant, but in God’s hands they become salt that gives flavor and light that brightens someone’s darkness.
The widow’s flour and oil were multiplied because she trusted. Our influence as salt and light grows when we trust God and generously place ourselves at His service.
Today, Jesus reminds us: do not hide your light. Do not underestimate the good that God can do through you. Offer your little to Him, and He will make it enough.
Challenge
Ask yourself today: What small gift, act of kindness, or sacrifice can I offer to God so that someone else may experience His love?
