“The greatest battle in life is not between good and evil around us, but between God and the idols competing for our hearts.”
In today’s First Reading, the prophet Elijah stands courageously before the people of Israel on Mount Carmel and asks a challenging question: “How long will you straddle the issue? If the Lord is God, follow Him.” The people had divided hearts. They wanted God, but they also wanted Baal. They wanted faith, but they also wanted security from other sources.
Elijah calls them to make a decision. And when God answers with fire from heaven, the people finally proclaim: “The Lord is God!”

In the Gospel, Jesus also speaks about faithfulness. He says that He has not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it. Jesus is teaching that true religion is not about choosing which commandments we like and ignoring the rest. Rather, it is about giving God our whole heart.
