From the Land of Manggarai to Our Plates: The Youth Movement in Ruteng Reviving Organic

"Data shows that Indonesia’s agricultural sector is still highly dependent on chemical fertilizers. Based on various agricultural reports, more than 80% of farmers in Indonesia still use inorganic fertilizers as their main production input".

This is where the role of young people becomes crucial. They are not only focused on production but also on education and marketing aspects. Several organic farming communities in Indonesia have begun using social media and digital platforms to market their products directly to consumers. This strategy helps shorten the long distribution chain that often disadvantages small farmers. If this approach is applied in Ruteng, organic products from Manggarai could gain stronger competitiveness in the market.

Furthermore, this movement also has significant social impacts. Organic farming is not only about healthy food, but also about rebuilding the relationship between humans and nature. The young generation involved in this movement learns that land is not merely a production tool, but a source of life that must be protected. This value is especially important in the modern lifestyle, which often separates people from the food production process they depend on.

If this movement continues to grow, Manggarai has the potential to become an example of a region that successfully transforms toward community-based sustainable agriculture. Moreover, it could serve as a national inspiration that changes in the food system do not always have to start from large government policies, but can also emerge from consistent and collaborative local initiatives.

Ultimately, the youth movement in Ruteng to revive organic food shows that major change always begins with small, consistent steps. Amid the dominance of modern agriculture dependent on chemicals, they offer a healthier, more sustainable alternative that benefits both nature and society. This movement not only improves food quality but also raises collective awareness about the importance of protecting soil as a source of life.

From the land of Manggarai to our plates, the journey of food is not merely a process of production and consumption, but also a reflection of future choices. If communities, governments, and young generations can work together to strengthen organic farming, then Manggarai could very well become a symbol of successful sustainable food transformation in Indonesia.
