Not Just Grammar: The Challenges of Academic Writing for EFL Students

"As a writer and observer of EFL learning contexts, I have noticed that many students struggle not only to construct grammatically correct sentences but also to develop ideas, organize arguments, and express critical perspectives. Writing academically requires students to engage in a complex process that combines linguistic competence, analytical thinking, and academic awareness".

The role of instruction should not be overlooked. In some learning environments, writing classes still emphasize grammatical accuracy more than idea development and critical engagement. Although grammar is important, students also need opportunities to brainstorm, draft, revise, and receive constructive feedback. Effective writing instruction should help students view writing as a process of thinking and communicating rather than merely producing error-free sentences.

Academic writing remains a persistent challenge for EFL students because it demands much more than language proficiency. It requires critical thinking, logical organization, familiarity with academic conventions, confidence, and continuous practice. Recognizing these interconnected challenges is an important step toward improving writing education. If educators focus not only on correcting language errors but also on nurturing students’ ability to think, argue, and express ideas, academic writing can become a powerful tool for intellectual growth rather than a source of frustration. Ultimately, helping EFL students become successful academic writers means empowering them to participate confidently in academic conversations and contribute meaningfully to the wider world of knowledge.
